Cary & Morrisville School Reassignment 2027–2028: What Families Need to Know

Families living in Cary and Morrisville may see changes to their assigned public schools beginning with the 2027–2028 school year.

The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) has proposed new attendance boundaries affecting several elementary, middle, and high schools. One of the main reasons for the changes is the upcoming opening of Morrisville High School in August 2027.

The proposal also aims to address overcrowding and balance enrollment across existing schools.

Important: As of October 8, 2026, these changes are still proposals. The Wake County Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the final plan on November 17, 2026.

New Morrisville High School Opening in 2027

Morrisville High School is scheduled to open in August 2027 near the intersection of Little Drive and Davis Drive, close to Parkside Elementary School.

During its first year, the new school is expected to serve 9th- and 10th-grade students only, allowing the school to expand gradually.

WCPSS is proposing a new attendance area for Morrisville High School, which would shift students from several existing high schools.

The proposed changes affect portions of the current attendance areas for:

  • Cary High School
  • Green Hope High School
  • Leesville Road High School
  • Panther Creek High School

These changes would apply to specific neighborhoods and addresses, not every student attending these schools.

For additional information, visit the WCPSS Morrisville School Projects page.

Other Proposed High School Boundary Changes

In addition to creating a new attendance area for Morrisville High School, WCPSS is proposing several adjustments to existing high school boundaries.

Green Level High School → Panther Creek High School

Some residential areas currently assigned to Green Level High School would be reassigned to Panther Creek High School.

Athens Drive Magnet High School → Cary High School

Certain addresses currently assigned to Athens Drive Magnet High School would move into the Cary High School attendance area.

These changes are designed to redistribute students and improve enrollment balance as Wake County continues to grow.

You can review the proposed boundary changes on the official WCPSS attendance area changes page.

Elementary School Boundary Changes in Cary and Morrisville

The proposal also includes adjustments to several elementary school attendance areas.

Some of the proposed changes include:

  • Cedar Fork Elementary and Northwoods Elementary: Portions of their attendance areas would be reassigned to Morrisville Elementary and Pleasant Grove Elementary.
  • Highcroft Drive, Salem, and White Oak Elementary: Certain residential areas would move to Mills Park Elementary.
  • Salem Elementary: Additional portions would be reassigned to Turner Creek Elementary and White Oak Elementary.
  • Mills Park Elementary: Some addresses would move to Cary Elementary.

One of the main goals is to reduce overcrowding at schools such as Cedar Fork and Northwoods while making better use of available capacity at nearby schools.

The plan also includes proposed adjustments involving Salem Middle, Mills Park Middle, Lufkin Road Middle, and East Cary Magnet Middle.

How to Check Whether Your Address Is Affected

WCPSS provides an interactive address lookup tool that allows families to compare current and proposed school assignments.

Check your address on the official WCPSS enrollment proposal map Enter a home address to see the schools assigned for 2026–2027 and the proposed assignments for 2027–2028.

This is particularly important for families considering buying a home in Cary or Morrisville.

Two homes within the same city—or even within nearby neighborhoods—may have different school assignments.

School attendance boundaries do not necessarily follow city limits or ZIP code boundaries.

Can Students Stay at Their Current School?

Some students affected by reassignment may qualify for a stability transfer, which allows eligible students to request permission to remain at their current school.

However, eligibility depends on WCPSS policies, the student’s circumstances, and the applicable reassignment rules.

Families should also be aware that transportation may not be provided for students who remain at their previous school through a transfer.

For official eligibility requirements and instructions, visit the WCPSS Enrollment Proposal website.

What Does This Mean for Homebuyers in Cary and Morrisville?

For families relocating to the Triangle area, school assignments are often an important part of choosing where to live.

However, buying a home within the current boundary of a particular school does not guarantee that the assignment will remain unchanged in future years.

If you are planning to purchase a home in Cary, Morrisville, or another Wake County community, consider these steps:

  1. Verify the current school assignment using the official WCPSS address lookup tools.
  2. Review any proposed boundary changes that may affect the property.
  3. Check the school’s calendar, enrollment restrictions, and transportation eligibility.
  4. Follow official WCPSS updates before making decisions based on a particular school assignment.

These considerations are especially relevant for families purchasing new construction homes in growing communities, where enrollment patterns and school boundaries may change over time.
